What Makes America Great

Over 400 years ago, Colonists came from Britain seeking asylum from religious persecution and economic difficulties. From there, the colonists created a nation where they could freely worship as they choose. Tensions between the colonists and Britain led to the Revolutionary War. Although at first, America had a slim chance of prevailing, they beat all odds in order to win the Revolutionary War.

That is what makes America great. The way we come together to help each other in times of crisis. Although during the Revolutionary War we might not have had the most organized army, but we definitely had the side with more spirit which led to our victory. Another time we came together was on September 11, 2001. People came from all over to help the victims of the attack. Firemen, boats, sympathies and many other things were sent to the residents of New York City. We honor our fellow citizens by setting up memorials across the country using pieces of the fallen Twin Towers as tributes to them.

Another thing that makes America great is that we are a representative democracy. If we do not like what the president or any elected official is doing we have the ability to not elect them in the next election. That is how the founders intended it to be. They did not want their progeny to have the problems they had with the British. They wanted their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on to live in a country where they could live freely express their feelings without the worry of being imprisoned or killed. The Constitution was made to ensure that the government would not infringe on the rights of its citizens.

Also, how our ancestors sacrificed themselves to protect our freedom and how in return we would do the same is something else that makes America great. It amazes me how quickly people responded to the attack on Pearl Harbor by joining the war effort.

America is great because of all the inventions we have created. We created cars, cell phones, lightbulbs, sticky notes, airplanes, potato chips, and the list goes on. If America had not been founded who knows where we would be in world development, for all I know we may not have even invented the Internet yet. America also had the first man on the moon and we created chocolate chip cookies. Another one of America’s great accomplishments is the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal was a way to shorten the distance ships had to travel between the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. It allowed people to transport different types of goods more cheaply within a shorter period of time.

To me, what makes America great is our ability to be free, how people help each other, and all the things America has done in the past 400 years to improve the world. But what I think is the most important thing that makes America great is our unity and as our president has said, “Together, we will make America strong again. We will make it wealthy again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And yes, together, we will make America great again. Thank you. God bless you. And God bless America.”
